"The silent tsunami"
High global food prices are creating "a silent tsunami", threatening to plunge more than 100 million people into hunger, says WFP's Executive Director Josette Sheeran.

Articles for parents:
Aside from the huge financial cost of travel sports, there are other costs as well. Youth sports should be fun and affordable not life dominating. Studies show that 73% of kids quit their childhood sport by age 13 because it ceases to be fun. AYSO encourages our players to try multiple sports and let soccer be a fun part of their youth sports experience.

Traveling comes at a high price
Playing multiple sports is important for the body development of young kids. Now, some kids focus on one sport too early. You see it a lot in soccer, where you are told supposedly have to play it year-round if you want to be any good, this is a lie.

Parents: Let Up!
Kids are now playing highly organized soccer (and baseball) as early as 4 years old. Why? When are they kids? How do they discover social skills on their own? How do they become self organized? They learn one thing very quickly: they cannot play the game without uniforms and the right shoes. They also learn very young that if their team loses, they have failed.

Youth Soccer "Adults Are Hurting Youth Sports"
Dan Gould, director of Michigan State's Institute for the Study of Youth Sports, said part of the problem is what he calls the "professionalization" of children's athletics. Adults are applying a professional model of training at ever-younger ages

New Volunteers Needed!

Due to the tremendous growth over the last several years, we are looking for volunteers to help manage over 200 volunteers who give their time to over 900 kids. We are looking for a volunteer coordinator, training coordinator, youth referee administrator, regional commssioner (Michael Fiscus will retire after this year, but will be available to help) and Field Director (check the contacts page for more), please Email us for more information.

Remember, we are all volunteers, most of us have full time jobs as well. Please make an effort to fill one of the needed roles, even just for one year, it will help. Most positions require a 1-2 year commitment, many of us are now over that and looking to find replacements. We are always looking for new people to help run our region. Fresh faces bring fresh ideas, that's what makes AYSO the best soccer program in the country.
